Tokyo, a bustling metropolis filled with vibrant culture, innovative technology, and irresistible cuisine, made for a thrilling backdrop for my first international trip. I was lucky enough to travel there for a Jiu Jitsu tournament, and it truly turned out to be an adventure of a lifetime. Accompanied by my two brothers, Alex and Chris, we dedicated two weeks to exploring this incredible city and creating lasting memories.
Arriving in Japan
Stepping off the plane, I was instantly captivated by the beautiful mix of tradition and modernity that defines Tokyo. The city buzzed with energy, and I could tell right away that this trip would be unforgettable. After a quick check-in at our accommodations, we dropped our bags, our stomachs grumbling in unison, eager for our first taste of Tokyo's famed food.
The Food Scene
Japan consistently earns accolades for its exceptional cuisine, and I was excited to dive in. Our first stop? Family Mart! This 24-hour convenience store quickly became our go-to spot. Stocked with quick meals, snacks, and local treats, it felt like a treasure chest for hungry travelers. We munched on onigiri, a simple yet delicious rice ball, and tried matcha-flavored sweets that rapidly became our favorites.

The highlight of our culinary adventure was undoubtedly our visit to Devils Ramen. As the steaming bowl was set before me, I was instantly mesmerized. With its rich broth, perfectly chewy noodles, and carefully arranged toppings, it easily became the best ramen I've ever tasted. We relished each bite, and this experience is one I will always cherish.
Jiu Jitsu Tournament in Chiba
The main reason for our trip was our Jiu Jitsu tournament held in Chiba. The atmosphere buzzed with excitement, filling the air with an unimaginable energy. Surrounded by other athletes, I felt a sense of belonging and adrenaline that transcended language. It was amazing to see experienced foreign grapplers display their skills, making the entire event mesmerizing.
My brother Alex and I competed in this tournament and I sadly lost a nail biting match. But my brother on the other hand had an amazing performance that I will never forget.
Exploring Shibuya
After the tournament, we set out to explore Shibuya, an epicenter of activity and excitement. Known for its iconic crossing, Shibuya's bustling atmosphere felt almost like a movie set. More than 2,500 people cross Shibuya Crossing at any given rush hour, creating a sight nothing short of spectacular.
As we walked through the streets, we were amazed by the eclectic mix of shops, restaurants, and neon lights. From fashion boutiques to themed cafés, Shibuya offered endless entertainment. We indulged in sweet crepes, filled with fruits and whipped cream, while soaking in the vibrant energy of the city.
Akihabara and Shinjuku Adventures

Next, our journey took us to Akihabara, the heart of electronics and otaku culture. The area buzzed with energy as we discovered shops filled with anime, video games, and the latest gadgets. Both Alex and Chris found some rare collectibles, while I enjoyed immersing myself in the fascinating world of Japanese pop culture.
As night fell, we made our way to Shinjuku, known for its lively nightlife. The moment we stepped onto the streets, the neon lights created a captivating atmosphere. We shared laughs and breathtaking moments with locals in unique bars that radiated charm and warmth.
Coffee Culture

Being coffee lovers, we couldn’t miss exploring Tokyo's café culture. One standout was Bongen Coffee. The meticulous attention to detail in both the ambiance and coffee preparation grabbed our attention. Sipping on our artisanal brews in that cozy café was a moment of calm among the whirlwind of our adventures.
Final Thoughts on My Tokyo Experience
As my two weeks in Tokyo wrapped up, I couldn’t help but feel grateful for the incredible array of experiences my brothers and I shared. From nail-biting Jiu Jitsu matches in Chiba to the bright lights of Shibuya, not to mention the serene moments in charming coffee shops, every day was a treasure. The food we sampled—from our Family Mart snacks to that unforgettable bowl of ramen—left me longing to return.
Tokyo is not just a city; it's a dynamic mix of experiences that seamlessly blends modern living with rich culture. I cannot wait to visit again and uncover even more of what this amazing city has to offer. Until next time, Tokyo! Your vibrant nights and delectable dishes will always call me back.
